Controls & Building Automation Design

Take control of your building’s energy efficiency with energy controls design services from Iconergy

It’s all about making your building work for you, not against you

Energy consumption and management are essential components of sustainable business. As we move towards a future that demands more efficient and sustainable energy usage, it is important to have the right tools and expertise to control and monitor energy usage, and that our buildings operate as efficiently as possible.

With controls design (which typically includes building automation and metering design) we can design your equipment controls around your needs, leaving you with total control of your building’s energy systems. By the end of a controls design project, our aim is to provide you not only with the tools to achieve lower-cost energy use, but the knowledge to utilize those tools optimally.

So, if you’re ready to take control of your building’s energy use but you’re not sure where to get started, keep reading! We’ll tell you everything you need to know about how Iconergy can help you make efficiency a mainstay with engineering controls design.

Building Automation & Metering Design

What is Controls Design?

Controls design involves designing systems that control and monitor energy usage in buildings. These systems include HVAC systems, lighting, and other electrical systems. At Iconergy we strive to create an energy-efficient building by minimizing the energy usage of these systems through optimized control strategies and enterprise solutions.

Optimizing these energy controls ensures optimal performance from all of your building’s energy systems during all modes of operation.  The two primary services we’ll focus on here are building automation systems and energy metering design and installation.

Building Automation Design

As the title suggests, building automation is about automating control of HVAC, lighting, electrical, mechanical, water, and other energy systems to ensure optimal performance and ease of use. By utilizing smart systems and modern energy technology, automation design allows us to design a building that runs efficiently while eliminating the hassle and energy waste of manually controlling those systems.

Energy Metering Design

Energy metering and sub-metering design account for the usage of every energy system in your building (HVAC, water usage, electricity usage, etc.). Energy metering design ensures that you can see changes in energy use in real-time, keep track of tenant energy use/billing, and more effectively monitor and manage building-wide energy use.

Our Approach to Controls Design/Submetering

Controls design and submetering are critical components of any energy management strategy.

At Iconergy, there are no “cookie-cutter” projects. Our approach to controls design and submetering involves a custom strategy built around your needs and project objectives. We recognize that every building and its accompanying energy systems are different, and we modify our strategy accordingly. Still, we’ll give you an explanation of our general framework for a controls design project:

Building & Project Assessment

We’ll begin by conducting a thorough assessment of your building’s existing energy systems. This typically includes reviewing mechanical and electrical equipment, analyzing the past and present energy usage of each system and identifying areas of improvement.

System Design

Based on our in-depth assessment, we’ll develop a customized controls design plan that outlines the changes needed to improve your systems. We’ll include recommendations for equipment upgrades, system modifications, smart/automated system installation, and the projected outcomes of these modifications.

System Installation

We’ll work with you to implement system upgrades non-invasively, so you can focus on running your business. We’ll hire and manage trusted teams to install new equipment, modify existing systems, and install meters to ensure your upgraded energy systems are performing as expected.

Measurement & Verification

Once the controls design and submetering equipment are installed, we monitor the building’s energy usage to ensure that the new systems are performing as expected. We’ll provide ongoing measurement, maintenance, and verification, so you can rest assured your new systems are providing improved energy efficiency.

Why is Controls Design Important?

There are plenty of reasons controls design is a standout resource for improving efficiency and going green. We’ll start with energy compliance. As you’re probably aware, our home state of Colorado is leading the charge toward clean energy use. And if you’re operating a business in Denver, chances are you’ve heard about Energize Denver.

In a nutshell, Energize Denver provided a number of ambitious new energy regulations, and commercial buildings will be expected to significantly decrease their emissions in the next few years. If your building is 25,000 sq. ft. or larger, you’ll be expected to submit annual energy use index (EUI) reports, showing reductions in energy use—and controls design projects can be the perfect tool to help you reach compliance. With that said, let’s take a close look at some of the on-site benefits of a controls design project with Iconergy.

Key Benefits of Controls Design with Iconergy

Controls design and submetering are critical components of any energy management strategy. By optimizing energy usage, you can save money, reduce your carbon footprint, and improve the comfort of your building’s occupants.
Energy
Savings

Controls design and submetering can result in significant energy savings! By optimizing energy usage and monitoring you can catch inefficiencies before they become a problem and save money on energy bills for the long term.

Environmental Sustainability

By reducing energy usage, you can reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future (this is vital for energy compliance as well)!

Improved Comfort

Controls design can improve the comfort of your building’s occupants by ensuring that HVAC systems, lighting, and other systems are operating efficiently.

Regulation Compliance

Here in Colorado and across the country, regulations are requiring owners to monitor and report their energy usage. Controls and metering design can help you remain transparent and compliant when it comes to energy use.

Increased Property Value

By implementing energy-efficient systems, controls and metering design will likely increase the value of your property and even attract tenants who are interested in a higher standard of sustainable business.
